About me

Through the early 2000’s I started a series of regular Silversmithing classes with Anton Pruden and Rebecca Smith at their gallery and workshop in Ditchling, East Sussex with a view to progressing into some kind of silver work on my retirement.

The classes were my first introduction to ‘3D’ work, and the design and qualities that should be reflected in every piece. While attending the classes I learnt many techniques which, 20 years on, have given me a good general understanding of the creative process for when I turned (excuse the pun…) to woodturning.

In the autumn of 2020 I took up woodturning determined to put my retirement to good use, taking classes with my very good friend Kevin Hutson (RPT), a professional woodturner of 45 years.

I love experimenting with different shapes and finishes, and learning about the hidden secrets within the wood that you expose as you are turning. It has been an exciting journey learning different woodturning techniques.

The outcome of this experimentation is that I like to incorporate an element of beading in all my pieces and exploit open grained woods with lime wax or ebonise high tannin content wood, if the species permits. I also like to pose myself with the occasional ‘brain teaser’, turning off centre or square shaped items to continue to challenge my developing skills.

I’m deeply grateful to Kevin, who has taught me so much and shown endless patience along with my very kind and supportive wife, Carol.

My journey continues……
